College textbook

Every student knows how it works. They register for classes at a junior college or a four-year school, and receive a list of each college textbook they will need for their classes. Most colleges and universities have one or more bookstores on campus where these texts can be purchased, along with all the other course packs and supplies needed for the semester. Often the books are used. Many students sell their books back to the store at the end of the semester, which means that they are available for a lower price than new ones would be. Students might also be able to buy used copies of the books they need directly from students who took the class in the past and no longer want their books. New editions come out at intervals of 5-10 years, as the books are updated with new information. This is more true of texts that are time sensitive, containing information about modern news, politics, economics, or advances in the sciences. A college textbook on a timeless issue like math or physics, in which changes to the body of information involved are less frequent, will be updated less often, meaning they will be readily available and comparatively inexpensive.

Today the college textbook market is quite competitive when it comes to price. Students still choose to buy at their on-campus book store for ease and convenience, but many are finding that shopping online for their books offers significant savings in some cases, for both used and new texts. Many colleges and universities may use the same book, increasing the number of locations they can be purchased, and bringing with it competition that drives down the prices. Many of these online sites that sell books will also purchase them, too.

A new trend in the college and university textbooks market is to rent books, rather than sell them. The student typically has to place a substantial deposit on the book, plus a rental fee. At the end of the semester, if the book is returned in roughly the same shape in which it was rented, the deposit price will be returned. This arrangement represents significant cost savings on some books, but may require that the user not mark the books in any way such as highlighting text. Purchasing the books remains the most common means of obtaining the necessary texts.

When it comes to learning how to become a teacher, many people argue that there is no better teacher than real world experience. However, before any prospective teacher can get into a classroom, there are some basic educational theories and pedagogical approaches that must be understood in order to know how to begin teaching. One of the best ways to attain this knowledge is through textbooks. However, for a textbook to be effective, it has to meet several key criteria.

The first thing that makes a good education textbook is how up to date it is. The field of education is always evolving, expanding on theories and ideas, contributing important classroom experiences and research. Because of this, textbooks that have not been updated recently can quickly become out of touch with the modern classroom. The best teaching practices are often derived from numerous educational theories, both old and new, so it is pivotal that the textbook contains not only a sound history, but the best of cutting edge educational research as well.

In addition to the timeliness of the content, a quality education textbook should always be based on real classrooms. Educational theory is important, but theory devoid of context is not useful for prospective teachers. Therefore, any textbook worth reading should have real classroom examples, maybe even relevant case studies to exemplify a point. The textbook should talk about real teachers in real classrooms, in order adequately prepare future teachers for their time in the classroom.

Perhaps the most crucial element to a quality education textbook is practical application. Though all teachers need sound educational theory, teaching is a profession that requires action and interaction. Future teachers need to be able to make the connection between theory and the classroom, so a textbook with a strong focus on application is vitally important. These textbooks help future teachers put their theory into action, which is the best way to prepare before actually stepping in front of a group of students. These applications can come in the form of discussion questions, writing assignments, mock lesson plans, and more, just as long as they make future teachers think about what they would do in their classroom while using the pedagogical theory presented in the textbook.

With this balance of up to date theory, real world examples, and practical application, a textbook can be a strong factor in creating able and prepared teachers.

Textbooks

Many of you that are taking college classes need to find your textbooks at the absolute lowest prices possible, since money is at a premium and cost savings are the name of the game. Your purpose in taking classes is to “better yourself” as they used to say. In today’s economy, the idea is to make yourself more marketable, open the doors to better jobs, and give you the chance to offer something better for yourself and your family. The high cost of books can be discouraging, but if you know where to search for them, you’ll find affordable options for your book buying.

Take your book list down to the local campus book store. Ask the clerk to gather together the textbooks you need for your upcoming semester’s courses. Ask for used books whenever possible, since they typically come much cheaper, perhaps 30% to 50% cheaper, than new books. When the clerk has pulled the order together, ask if there are any discount coupons available. If the answer is “no,” ask to see a manager. When that person arrives, let them know that you are willing to buy the books from the campus store rather than resorting to online purchases, but you’ll need more incentive. It will be helpful to have documentation of what the books cost online, which is usually 10%-15% less than can be found at local stores. Print off the prices from the websites and take them with you. It never hurts to ask, and the manager may choose to match the prices offered online. Typically, however, their policies make them stick to the listed prices, with no room for negotiation.

The reality is that, on average, you will still spend less if you shop exclusively online at the vast number of sites that specialize in the sale of textbooks. The competition produced by the internet is fierce, shrinking profit margins for online retailers, and providing you with better prices. When that is the bottom line, peruse online sites to find the one that offers the best prices, free shipping, and a liberal return policy should you drop the class. Make sure the site will not substitute new books for used, charging you the difference, when used books are not available. If you are going to keep your book expenditures at a minimum, choosing used books is an absolute must.

Cheap Textbooks

Posted by admin on January 18, 2010 (0) Comment

A large part of the expense for college is purchasing the books required for class, with full-time students usually spending hundreds of dollars per semester on them. For most students the pursuit of cheap textbooks is the name of the game. This means looking for used textbooks if they are available. Some students will want to buy new textbooks if they believe they will serve as reference books in their later studies or during their careers, but they still want to find them at the lowest possible price. Start your search for inexpensive books on campus, where students place ads in the school paper or post them online for selling their books. If they particularly hated the class, you might get a great deal!

Typically, however, most of the on-campus action is at the local book store. They offer the best way to get new and used books quickly. But some are discouraged from shopping there because lines are long at the height of the buying and selling season, which is usually during finals of the current semester. Many don’t want to spend even an hour away from studying to hit the book store. Plus, cheap textbooks have never been the trademark of campus book stores. The best bet for finding the cheapest prices is to shop online. Many websites specialize in the sale of new and used college texts, and the major national retailers have also entered the profitable field. Competition is at a premium, so be sure to check out several sites. When you spend a minimum amount, which varies from site to site, free shipping will be included, further making the online approach attractive.

To obtain cheap textbooks for the coming semester it might be best to shop well-ahead of time. Track down the list of books you’ll need, then shop a month or so before the end of the current semester. That way, you’ll have the best chance to secure used books, which will likely save you 50% or more over having to buy a new copy of the book. Used copies therefore go more quickly, and the site might sell out of them. Another secret is to look for “seconds” which are books with bad bindings or which have been compiled with pages in the wrong order. These usually come at the cheapest price of all.

College Texbook

Every time you have to purchase an expensive college textbook it seem like it makes a significant dent in the budget, if you are a typical undergraduate or grad student on tight resources. But here’s another perspective: Try to look at every book or piece of equipment you are required to purchase for class, even if the course is one that has nothing to do with your chosen major or future profession, as an investment in your lifelong success. Business students will want to know how a history class on ancient Rome can be an asset to their future as certified public accountants. The answer might be in understanding how Rome’s public greed, fueled by military and technological successes, without attention to developing new and diverse revenues of income, can lead to personal, business, or societal collapse. Architecture students might wonder how a course in English Literature will benefit them, and the response might be that an understanding of the connection between the values of Victorian England and the incredible architecture it produced might provide insight into the relationship between modern culture and style.

Who knew a college textbook could offer such a key to knowledge! When it comes to your course reading in college or graduate school, much of what you gain from it will be the result of what you put into it. Read ahead for class, be prepared with questions that illuminate what you read, and you’ll get the most bang for the significant bucks you spend on your books. And those texts do cost quite a few bucks! Do your budget a favor by shopping for the best possible prices on new and used texts for class. The campus bookstore will have the books needed, but they may not have the best prices, since, in a local sense, they have a monopoly on the sale of many of them. Still, being able to get them into your hands will be a benefit, especially if classes begin in a day or two.

If you have the time to shop online and wait for the books to be shipped, you may find better prices on websites that sell new or used copies of every college textbook required. Shop by ISBN number to get the right edition, and set up an account for fast, usually free, shipping. Then make the most of the investments by obtaining a well-rounded education.

In addition, thanks to the multimedia capabilities offered by today’s generation of computers, an I college text book is interactive in ways that a regular college textbook could never be. Many of the more challenging concepts being covered by the text are elaborated upon further, and there are also links to tutorial videos, as well as other sites and documents that relate to the lesson being taught. With just the click of a mouse, you can access resources that allow you to dig deeper into the subject matter at hand, enriching the learning process, and helping to increase your comprehension of what is being presented to you.

These interactive college textbooks are truly marvelous tools to aid in your studies, and that is what makes it unbelievable that, in most instances, they are less expensive than traditional textbooks. It truly is almost to good to be true, and yet there are scores of college textbooks available for download right now, and getting them couldn’t be easier.
